These past few days have been very relaxing. Thursday we had orientation for most of the day at the Universidad de Malaga. We were supposed to meet and go at 9, but my alarm never seemed to go off and I woke up late in a panic. I hopped on the first bus I could, but I was already way behind the group. Today the commute was tricky because we had to transfer buses and our program director was there to help us. Since I was late, I did this by myself but luckily with no problems. I even made a friend on the bus who wanted to practice his English with me. When I got to Teatinos (the main campus), I found the group sitting and eating a small breakfast at the cafeteria. As the director explained to me, in Spain, it is rare that there is never enough time. People do not rush here and the culture seems to be more casual than America. While this seems like an easy way of life, it has actually been a somewhat difficult adjustment to make.
The orientation was long but informative. We picked our classes, and I will be taking a language tutorial, a culture class, Spain and the EU, and a translation class. Only my translation class will be at the University with Spanish students. The other three will be with only Dickinson students. I am nervous but excited to start classes.
Friday was also a easy day. We were supposed to have a tutorial, but it the program director never got a confirmation from the students teaching us. This was another example of the laid back manner in which Spain operates. So Friday we went to the beach and at night went back to the beach to get Tapas. Then we headed to bed early for our trip to Nerja the next day.
Hasta luego!
